Free Cut File | JOY – scrapbook layout and cards

Hello everyone!

Joy Free Cut File @ scrapbooknerd.com

Nathalie has designed the JOY cut file (available at the store now!)  so that it can be used as a background on a page, but you will also find the individual shapes so that you can create your own unique designs.

For her project, Nathalie is using a paper from Simple Stories Winter Wonderland as a base for the project.

To bring the festive colors to the page, she is using My Mind’s Eye “Oh What Fun” collection to add details and back the title of her page.  Here is her final project:

We just loved how the picture pops from the soft snowflake background.  Remember to stop by the store to pick your free copy of the download.  Now it is Joy’s turn to show you what the cut file inspired her to create.

Joy used the extra pieces included in the Holiday Joy cut file to create her card. Joy welded 2 of the snowflakes to the JOY sentiment and cut some extra snowflakes. Using some watercolour paper and some Dylusions spray mist, Joy made the blue background and misted the interior cuts of the JOY sentiment pink.

Bright & Bold Holiday Joy cardThe misted background has some ink splatter in the same colour mist for some added interest.close up, winter joy cut file

Silhouette Savvy Series – Stitching Guides

Hello Nerds, and friends!

It is time for a new entry of the Silhouette Savvy Series.   This is  a tutorial, that had been shown before, but since then the Silhouette software has been updated, and the new version does not perform all the commands from the previous version, so I want  to show you an updated version of the same tutorial.   So sit back, and enjoy the following video that will show you how to create the stitching guide followed by the completion of the layout:

As you can see in the video, the Silhouette software does not have a perforate edge command anymore, instead you have to tell the machine what to do by choosing the type of line you want it to create on the layout.

I used the cut-line to add the stitching that forms the background/title for this page.   This is a way to shorten the tedious work of poking holes along the entire perimeter of the design.   This title took a bit of time to stitch (6 strands of embroidery floss use), but the texture and look it brings is worth the time… Just put on some music or a movie on, and start stitching away.

Once all the stitching was completed, I accented all the details with some Shimmer watercolor (Prima Marketing Metallics Palette), and some embellishments from the Illustrated Faith Advent collection.

I kept the stitching as the second focal point of the page, and chose a b/w picture so that it pops from the layout,  A few paper layers and embellishments complete this page.

I hope you try this new and updated way to create a stitching guide using the Silhouette Cameo.  Remember I am a comment away if you have questions on how this came together.

See you all soon!

Lightbox Play – With Barb

Hello everyone!  Welcome to another Scrapbook Nerd Academy with Scrapbook Nerd.

For any of you out there who have seen my Instagram account, or those who know me personally, you know that I am completely addicted to my Heidi Swapp Lightbox!  I love to change it up and leave different messages, or to celebrate a special occasion.  Sometimes, however, what I want to share just isn’t in the premade tiles or strips. Sometimes I just want a pretty background for a message.  On those occasions I head for my computer and print off what I’m looking for.  In this tutorial, I will share just how easy that is.

First, here’s a look at the light box sign I created for this tutorial. I have used the Heidi Swapp original light box, and two of the different Heidi Swapp letter sets.

In order to customize your signs, or to add your own backgrounds or images, you will need inkjet transparencies.  You can find these at any office supply store.

The first thing I do, when looking to add a background image, is head to google images and just start searching for an image related to what I plan on saying on my message. When looking for an image, you want to make sure that the size is large enough. If the image is only 500 pixels x 500 pixels, then it will become very pixelated once you try and make it bigger. An image like this would be fine if you just wanted to print out a small icon, but not for a background.

HINT – in order to see how big the image is, just hover your curser over the image and the dimensions should pop up.  If not, once you save the photo, you can check the size in the image properties. If you’re having problems seeing the size, you should be able to tell if it’s going to look pixelated once you put it into your editing programme and make it larger.)

Once you find your image, save the image, or copy and paste it right into your publishing programme.  When I’m doing my light box sign images, I find it easiest to just copy the image and paste it right into my word programme.

Then I just drag and make my image the size I want.

If you are doing a full-sized background image, like I did on my sign, you will want your image to be no more than 9 inches tall.

Print your photo onto the transparency according to the package instructions. The inkjet transparencies have a coating on the printing side. If you wish to have the smooth side facing out, you will need to mirror your image.  I find that it doesn’t matter when its placed in the lightbox, as you can’t tell, so I print it as it is. However, there are times when I do want the shiny side out, so I will mirror the image.

Once the image is printed you will need to cut the image into three to be able to slide in into the tracks on the lighbox. This is where it can get tricky.

Each track measures about 2 7/8ths high. So, you will need to cut each strip to measure 2 7/8″ high. However, between each track, there is a 1/4″ gap. The photo below shows the side of the lightbox where you can see the gap between each track.

You need to account for the tracks when making your cuts.  If you just cut your image, without taking out the 1/4″ strip between the tracks, your image will look stretched out.  For some images, this won’t matter, but in the case of a photo

To make your cuts:

  1. Make your first cut straight across at the top of your image with your trimmer.
  2. From your first cut measure 2 7/8″ down and cut straight across with your trimmer. That strip should slide right into the top track. It its slightly too big, just trim a little off until it slides in easily.
  3. For the second strip, you will need to cut a 1/4″ off the top of the remaining image piece to account for the 1/4″ track.  (the photo below, which is actually my bottom strip, show me cutting off the 1/4″ to account for the track. without doing this, your image will look stretched out once placed into the lightbox.)
  4. Then you will cut your 2 7/8″ strip for the middle piece. Trim, slightly, if needed, to make it fit.
  5. For the third strip, you will need to cut a 1/4″ off the top of the remaining image piece to account for the 1/4″ track.
  6. Then you will cut your 2 7/8″ strip for the third piece. Trim, slightly, if needed, to make it fit.

Once your image is cut and in place, you can add your message.

Here are some other signs I’ve done by printing my own backgrounds or photos:

This photo, below, would have looked very odd, if I hadn’t taken out the 1/4″ to account for the gap between each track.

This full-sized photo was done in the landscape mode which is smaller than the light box, and so there is a gap at the top, as you can see. I also added text right to the photo as I didn’t want to cover the photo with the letter tiles.

If you don’t have a light box, you need to get one. They are so much fun to play with and there’s so much you can do with them. They are available at Scrapbook Nerd. (they are out of stock right now – but contact us and we will re-order them for you.) We also have many of the accessories that go along with these.

Join us, later this week, for a Facebook Live where we will be demonstrating this, and the new We R Memory Keepers Photo Lights live.  Watch our facebook page for that.

Thanks for checking out the tutorial this week.

Countdown to Christmas – Day 18 – Snow Globe

countdown-to-christmas2016

Bonjour friends,
Today is the last day in our 2016 Countdown to Christmas, we hope you found some inspiration with all the projects the creative team has been sharing.

I wanted to create some small gifts for some friends this year, so I decided to make some homemade snow globes with the wire trees from the Snow & Cocoa collection. I think they turned out pretty cute.homemade snow globe by Joy @ scrapbooknerd.com

I used some jars from the dollar store, some other craft supplies I had leftover from a craft project I did with my nieces & nephew, including fake snow & glitter spray. I also used a glue gun to keep everything stuck to the lid.

The star on the tree is wood veneer and the snowman was stamped, die-cut and I added a little colour with watercolour crayons. The last little addition once I put the jar on was a bit of twine on the lid.

If you’ve been creating some holiday projects we’ed love to see them, head over to our Friends page on Facebook and share. Happy holidays!

Countdown to Christmas – Day 17 – String Art

Welcome to Day 17 of our Christmas countdown.

I love string art! Recently I saw somethin on pintererst and was inspired to give it a try.

snowflake1

I used a wood board plaque from Jillibean.  I found a snowflake image on google that I used as my template. I positioned the template where I wanted it on the board and started hammering in the nails.  I left the nails protruding a little.

snowflake2

snowflake3

Once all the nails were in place, I started wrapping the string.  I wrapped each one twice as the baker’s twine was a little to fine.

Once the string was all wrapped, I tore the paper from underneath.

This is the finished product.  I love how it turned out!

Sunday card share #61

Sunday card share at scrapbooknerd.com

Hello crafty friends,
Welcome to another Countdown to Christmas edition of SCS.
I have a few tags to share with you today using some Tim Holtz Distress inks and some Mini Layering Stencils.
countdown-to-christmas2016
I like to add a little something homemade to gift bags and presents and a tags are usually quick to make especially when there’s only one layer. The tags below are decorated with ink, stencils and word stickers.Sunday card share Tim Hotlz mini layering stencils and distress ink

Simple layering of ink and stencils (or stamps) help make these tags quick to complete. The stencils did most of the work for me so all I had to do is come up with some designs.

Sunday card share Tim Hotlz mini layering stencils and distress ink

Shabby Shutters & Peeled Paint were used for the trees on the tag above and gold ‘snow’ was added to the tag below with a splatter type stamp.

Kraft coloured paper and tags are a favourite of mine, white ink looks fabulous on it and when combined with red you have a classic holiday colour scheme. Can’t go wrong with that. 😀

Countdown to Christmas – Day 14 – It’s the Magic of Christmas

Nathalie @ scrapbooknerd.com

Hello everyone!
I am sure most of us have had to make runs to a mall during the busy Holiday season!    I sure have had my share of late visits to the mall, but i have learned to bring my kids with me (and enjoy the moments together).  Even during those busy and crowded mall runs, I always make sure to stop at the Mall’s Christmas Tree display, and take pictures of the kids.  They are not always the best quality picture, but I like seeing the beautiful colors and decorations, I call it Christmas Magical.

magic1

For today’s inspiration, I wanted to used one of those blurry pictures to document our busy mall excursions.  Since time is limited through the holidays, I created this layout in less than an hour, by using the tree cut files from Scrapbook Nerd’s So Very Merry cut file.  I simply backed the cut outs with papers from Crate Paper’s Snow and Cocoa collection, and attached to one of the papers from My Mind’s Eye Sugar Plum collection .  I used the image on the paper to guide the placement of the trees.

magic2

The title comes from The Cut Shoppe’s Christmas Magic cutfile. I chose to use white card stock for all the cut-outs to keep a soft and contrasting look on the glittery patterned paper.  Using the same papers  from the Snow and Cocoa collection, I backed and layered the picture.  Once the picture was glued, I used pieces from both collections to create small clusters around the picture.   Here is the completed layout:

magic3

I love the softness of the page.   I hope this inspires you to create a document about those blurry pictures we store.  Go for a simple design;  if you own a digital cutting machine, pull out some cut files and use them to create cut-outs for your project.  If you don’t own a die cutting machine, then look through the papers and add-ons in a collection, you will be surprise to find a lot of images that could be used in the design

Let us know if you have any questions about this project.  We hope our projects inspire you  during the upcoming Holidays.
Take care!

Christmas Countdown Day 13: December Daily

Paige @ scrapbooknerd.com

This year will be my third year doing the December Daily project. I really enjoy looking back at previous years and seeing the different traditions and events from year to year, and how my boys are growing. I find that it also helps to ground me in being present and slowing down enough to enjoy the season as December busy-ness descends.

For those who are not familiar with this project, it typically involves telling one story through photos and journaling for each day of December (either until the 25th or 31st). Here are some reflections from my 2015 album, and some of the things I liked most about my album.

  1. Album Cover:

  7. Blessings and Joys: On Day 10, I wrote ten blessings in my life on tags, and then created a pocket in which to house them. Then, on Day 15, I asked both of my children to write a list of things that bring them joy. I love having something in their writing (besides their Santa letters).

Sunday card share #60 remix

Sunday card share at scrapbooknerd.com

Welcome!
Today’s card share has been remixed for our Countdown to Christmas series. The creative team is sharing holiday inspired projects until the end of the month and this post is packed with holiday cards.

ctc-nov-20aAll my cards today feature Prima Marketing adhesive rub-ons & Deco Foil. After my last card share we got some questions on how I used the negative/leftover image from a rub-on to create another project. I share more of that process below.

This first card uses a foiled focal image and a heat embossed background. Simple and interesting with the extra details.
ctc-nov-20b

  1. After creating the first card I was left with the fabulous negative image you see below.
  2. Using a piece of double-sided tape, I burnished on the image.
  3. The adhesive now holds the foil and is sticky in the middle where there is no foil.
  4. I adhered the image to some white cardstock and removed the top layer on the foil to expose the adhesive.
    ctc-nov-20c
    5. I place some silver foil over top of the image, rub it with my fingers then removed the extra silver foil to reveal the final snowflake image.

Countdown to Christmas Day 7- Cute Little Snowmen

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Christmas Countdown.  Today is day 7. I hope you’re enjoying all these creative projects as much as I am.

Today I’m sharing a quick, but cute little craft.  I saw this idea on Pinterest and had to make some! This one is so quick and easy that it’s perfect to do with the kids. It’s made using the battery operated tea lights, pipe cleaners, a sharpie,  a bit of ribbon, and little pom poms.

I didn’t do such a great job with the sharpies, so I need to redo the faces.

Thanks for popping in today. Be sure to come back to see the projects each day!
