Creative Team Weekly Digest

Hi there!

Another week is just finishing. Time to relax, and recharge before Monday comes by.   It is amazing how fast time is running, we are headed to the middle of Summer (here in Canada) and finally the weather has cooled off a  bit, and we are enjoying beautiful Summer days.  How about a bit of inspiration for the weekend, maybe this will be your starting point for a new project!

This week, we asked the Nerd Girls to showcase out free cut files in their projects, and we are floored by what each of them shared on social media.  First up is Mari.

Mari chose the Stellar Shapes cut file to create this gorgeous page about her daughter and soon -to-be Son-in-law.

Mari used a bit of Distress Oxides to create the soft mixed media behind each of the shapes.  The colors in the background bring the detail of the cut outs, and match all the embellishments from Pebbles’ Patio Party collection.

The soft background contrasts and complements the picture beautifully.   The well placed cut outs just frame the picture nicely.  SUch a beautiful layout, Mari!

Next is Gisele and a gorgeous double page layout

Gisele chose the Together Hearts cut filel to create the two pages of her layout.   She backed each of the hearts with papers from Simple Stories’ “Hello Summer” collection, and framed each of ther grand-nieces pictures with the cut out.

Gisele used papers from the Hello Summer collection to form the background of the layout, as well as to layer the pictures of her grand-nieces.  She added lots of details using the stickers that come included in the collection, as well as some puffy hearts from Pinkfresh Studio.

She also combined some fussy cut florals from the Hello Summer collection withe chipboard stickers from Crate Paper’s Wild Heart collection, and stickers from Photoplay’s Stuck on You collection.   Such a beautiful and very colorful double page, Gisele.

Last is Nathalie with a light take on this week’s focus.

Nathalie used the Let The Sunshine In cut file to create a large focused title/background for her page.     She used Vicki Boutin’s Art Crayons to create a soft mixed media look for this page, using the colors of Simple Stories’s  “Hello Summer” collection as inspiration.

She backed the cut out with papers from the Hello Summer collection.  A bit of foam adhesive creates that soft shadow in the page and behind the cut-out.

So many fun elements and beautiful florals  in the Hello Summer collection!  Nathalie combined both to create clusters around the picture and layout.  Beautiful work, Nathalie

Well that is all for us this week.  We hope that you are inspired to visit the Scrapbook Nerd online store and download a few of our free cut files, and also check all the new collections arriving at the store.

Til next time.

New Free Cutfile – Pretty Petals

Scrapbook Nerd and the Cut Shoppe

Hello there!

It is time for a new free cut file! YAY!!!

Our friends at the Cut Shoppe have created the Pretty Petals cut file just in time for Spring. The florals in this design are fun, and so easy to combine to document your  memories, at any time or season of the year.

I took advantage of the floral designs in the cut file to create a cascade of flowers in my layout that celebrates Sister Love.

Using the Silhouette Software, the floral motifs were sized to be at the largest 2.5 in.  Once the florals and the leaf pair were sized, a few extra leaves from the Fall Faves cut file  were also added to the file, and all cut from white textured cardstock.

All the flowers were backed using papers from Pink Paislee’s Pick Me Up collection,  however not the entire cut out was glued to the paper.  Instead glue was just added to the center of the cut out, so that the  petals of the flowers will lift, thus creating movement in the page.

The two flower design were backed with the same papers, so that they could be evenly spread on the page.

To back the leaves, a combination of papers from the Pick Me Up and Turn The Page collections were used – all leaves were backed with a diferent shade of green paper-.   The leaves cut outs wre glued fully to the paper, unlike the flower ones.

Before adding the flowers to the paper, a bit of mixed media was added using some white acrylic paint, and Jane Davenport’s Mermaid markers.  Once the background was dried, the picture was propped on some fun foam.

The flowers were then glued to the page to form  a cascade (half moon) around the picture.  Foam adhesive and strong glue were used so that there is dimension and movement in the page.  Since there is so much detail added to the page, just a few extra embellishments were necessary.   These chipboard pieces, sequins and stickers all come from Paige Evans’ Pick Me Up collection.

To complete this page, a title was created using a combination of chipboard stickersm and small alpha stickers wre used.  A few drops of gold ink, and journal lines complete this page.

The floral design and color in this page are the perfect way to celebrate sister love at its best.  Now it is your turn to put the cut file to work in a project of your own.  Stop by Scrapbook Nerd to get a free download of the file.

Remember to tag the store #scrapbooknerdca wheneever  you share your finished project on social media,  We would love to see your take on this file.  Have Fun!!!

New Free Cut File – Shattered Glass

Scrapbook Nerd and the Cut Shoppe

Hello friends and fans!!

It is the beginning of a new month, which means time for a new cut file release!   YAY!!!

This month, our friends over at the Cut Shoppe  have created a super fun cut file,
“Shattered Glass”. This cut file is so fun and versatile, you will want to use it for your next
project.

Some of our creative team members have been playing with this cut file, and you are going to see how versatile it can be in the next projects.  First up is Nathalie.

She used the Silhouette Software to create the background for her scrapbook page by welding a polygon and the cut file.  The blank space in the middle of the background now becomes the perfect place to add her picture.

She used the colors and papers in Vicki Boutin’s All The Good Things collection to back some of the cut out empty spaces, and to create a bit of mixed media where the picture would be placed.  Then embellished the page with the coordinating add-ons from the All The Good Things collection from American Crafts.

Now before you run to the store for your free download, let’s take a look at what Joy created with this cut file:

Joy was inspired to create some masculine cards with this cut file. After cutting the file at approximately 8.5″x11″ she used it like a stencil with some Distress Inks. FREE Shattered Glass cut file, cards by Joy for scrapbooknerd.com

One of the perks of cutting paper stencils is that you can use the cut for a project when you’re doing with the inking. If you use the stencil with paint the paint will dry and create a protective layer on your paper stencil and make it more durable to use again and again.

Joy created a big enough panel to make two cards from this one piece of cardstock.

Joy used a fine black marker to create a sketchy look on the stenciled paper to give the pattern a bit of pop and because she was going to use black cardstock on each of the cards.
These cards are fun and slightly snarky will used for her husbands birthday week.

Letting the background do most of the work Joy kept the sentiments simple and she did not use much to embellish the cards fronts.

Head over to the shop to download you FREE Shattered Glass cut file today.

Now it is your turn to use the cut file on a project of your own.  Remember to tag us #scrapbooknerdca when you share one of your pages using one of our cut files.  We love to see how you use them on your projects.

Stop by the store to pick up a free download copy of this and many cut files. Thanks for stopping by.

Our friends over at The Cut Shoppe have created these lovely cut files, exclusively for Scrapbook Nerd, and we love how versatile they can be when creating all those special projects.  Here are just a few samples of what some of our DT has created using the cut files:

Love layout by Joy using the FREE Crazy Love cut file

Joy’s layout combines a few of her favourite things; paint, stamping, gold splatter, and some of her own pattern paper. Joy likes to use old scrapbooking paper and gives a new life with acrylic paint, stencils and other mediums. She used that paper behind the LOVE word for a graffiti look.

Using the Luck Stars dies from My Favorite Things Joy die cut the stars from some POW gold glitter paper. When cutting this paper you will need to use a shim as it does have a thin plastic backing on it. The stamping on this layout uses an old Hero Arts Music background stamp.

Joy used Gold Heidi Swapp Gold Lame and some coordinating Dina Wakley Blackberry paint for the splatter on this page.

Nathalie used the Crazy Love to document a selfie gone wrong on her page:

Nathalie's Page

She welded the “XO” image a few times to create her background, and then used Pebbles’s Forever My Always collection to back the cut-out, and add some small details to the page.

Nathalie's Page Detail

She added a bit of hand stitching to each of the hearts inside the “O”s and then brought a bit more of that sparkle to the page using some Vicki Boutin Gold Glaze and an Echo Park (Beach Towel) stencil to the background.

This page is filled with small details, that complement that sweet picture of Nathalie’s baby stealing a kiss from dad!.

We hope that the free cut files and the samples our DT have provided inspire you to create a special project about or for your loved ones.   Remember to tag/link Scrapbook Nerd whenever you use this project and share it on social media;  we would love to see what you create with these files.

Stop by the Scrapbook Nerd store to pick your free copy of these files, and to check all the new goodies that are arriving daily at the store’s shelves!

Silhouette Savvy Series: Welding Cut Files

Tutorials and creative tips

Hi there!

Hope you are doing well!

We are heading into February (time is flying!), and that means “Valentine’s day”.    The store will be releasing a few free cut files, this month.  The Love Story cut file is available now and the rest will follow on Feb, 1st.

I wanted to show you an easy way to manipulate the cut file to create a one-of-a-kind cut out by welding some of the cut file images.  So sit back, and take notes on how to weld cut file images together:

Here is a small cheat sheet on the steps to follow:

  • Open and trace each of the images you will be using.  Make sure that the image is converted into a Compound Path (highlight the entire image -only what will be used in the cut out-, right click on the mouse, and chose “Make Compound Path”
  • Move the image so that it is intersecting?touching the other image/images that it will be welded to
  • Highlight the all the images to be weld, right click the mouse, and chose “Weld”  or chose the Modify window, and click on the “Weld”comand.

It is that simple!  Two things to  remember are:

  1. Make sure you are only selecting the image that you will be welding together  ( you can always get rid of any extra images by releasing the path, and then deleting any unwanted pieces.  Don’t forget to convert the  cleaned image back to a Compound path).
  2. The images being welded have to intersect/touch for this comand to function correctly

Now let me show you how this page came together using the cut out created in the previous video, a bit of mixed media, and the beautiful “ROMANCE” collection from Simple Stories. SO  sit and enjoy the nex few minutes:

As you see, I used a bit of watercolor and Yupo transluscent paper to create my own marble paper to back the cut file.

All the embellishments from the “Romance” collection complement the picture of my husband and I while watching tv.

I hope this inspires you to bring out your Silhouette machines, and create a one-of-a-kind cut out by simply welding some images together.

Let me know if you have questions about how this came together.

Take care!

Scrapbook Nerd Creative Team Weekly Digest

This week the creative team has been having fun creating an interesting assortment of fun and cool projects.

Up first we have Nathalie. Nathalie loves to document stories about her children; the focus of this layout is her son!

Nathalie used papers and embellishments from the new Pinkfresh Studio’s “Boy Fort” collection which is perfect for documenting this story. The gorgeous mixed media was created with the Decadent Pies palette from Prima Marketing.

The title comes from the Pinkfresh Studio The Mix1 puffy stickers combo.

Next we have Gisele’s fun project.

Gisele created a 12×12 layout using the 6×6 paper pad and ephemera from Pink Paislee “Spellcast”.

She also used some Little B washi feather tape, a web shaped cut file from the Silhouette online shop, a leaf punch (used on “Creekside” from One Canoe Two).  The bats were a Dollarama find!

The fun details to this layout are so awesome!!  The photos are precious…such a fun story to document!

Mari created a tutorial project earlier this week, demonstrating ways to mix up the size of layouts in scrapbooking albums.  This is a 9×12 layout. This size can be mixed in with other layouts in the 12×12 album.

This project was created using papers and embellishments from Pink Pailee “Turn the Page”.  A patterned paper vertical strip on the left and then a perpendicular horizontal strip attached creates a place for the photo, journaling, and title to sit. The title “Latte” was created with Pink Fresh Studio puffy alphas.

This collection has so many fun pieces, including die cuts and phrase pieces to create fun clusters on projects.  This is a simple and easy design to create…especially for the times when perhaps simple and easy is what fits into the plan.

Next, Nathalie created this wonderful layout using the free cut file Stellar Shapes new to the shop this week. This layout is absolutely stunning!! Click here for the cut file.

The mixed media behind the cut file and photo adds so much interest to this layout!

The addition of the handwritten journaling in white is perfect beside the photo!

Mari created a fun little card project using the MFT Happy Pawliday and Handwritten Holiday stamp sets and the Knit Picky 6×6 paper pad from Lawn Fawn.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today!!

Free Cut File | 12×12 layout – SWEET CHARM –

Hello there!

Nathalie, with you today,  bringing you a bit of inspiration using the newly released  “X to my O” cut file.   This new file was designed by the Cut Shoppe exclusively for Scrapbook Nerd, and you can find it in the store for free.

I played a bit with the original design, and separated the files, so that i can cut the outer circle out of patterned paper, while choosing to create a stitching guide for the xo pattern.

For this page, I reached for MME’s On Trend 2 collection, so the stitching was completed with the colors of the papers in the collection.

Once the stitching was done, I cut the circle from one of  the papers in the collection, and used a bit of foam tape to attach it to the stitched mat.

The picture of my niece on her 8th birthday was then placed inside the bottom corner of the circle, and then I used various embellies from the collection to create a cluster at the bottom corner of the picture.

A simple title at the opposite corner of the cluster complete the layout.   I just love the texture and dimension on this page, and it all was created based on the new “X to O” cut file.   So stop by the Scrapbook Nerd Store to pick up your free copy of the cut file.   Remember to tag @scrapbooknerdca whenever you share your finished projects using this cut file onto social media.   We love to see how you use the files!!

As always, I am a comment away if you need assistance or have a question on how this came together.

See you soon!

Free Cut File | 12×12 Layout – H2O PLAY –

Hi there!

Nathalie with you today -it has been a while since my last post!-, bringing you some inspiration using the “All Angles” cut file.   This new cut file was designed by Ashley Horton from the Cut Shoppe exclusively for Scrapbook Nerd, and it is now available for free at the store.

This cut file is great to document all types of memories.  Since we have had a super packed summer season, there are plenty of pictures to document, so I chose to put a Summer/water spin to the cut file.

First, I used Distress Oxides to create a watercolor background effect on white cardstock.   While that dried, i created the cut out for the page, by adding an offset to the image, and then just cutting about half of it only.

I backed every other one of the triangles with papers from Bella Blvd.’s Secrets of the Sea collections, but opted to also glue some of the negative triangle cut outs as open flaps here and there -a bit of foam adhesive was used to create dimension on the page-.

Once the background was completely dried,  it was trimmed by about 1/4 of an inch on each side, and then it was completely glued  to one of the papers from the Secrets of the Sea girls collectlion.  The cut out was then attached  on an angle on the page.

To bring the colors of the water to life, the palette on the clusters and titles for this page were kept to blue, yellow and s few green spots.    Since I wanted the picture and background to stand out, I kept the clusters small, and just to the negative spaces on the page.  Here is the final layout:

The combination of the mixed media, and the angular cut out are just perfect to document this summer/pool memory.  Now that you have seen the cut file in action, it is time to stop by the store to pick up your free copy of the file.   I cannot wait to see what you create with it.  Remember to tag @Scrapbooknerdca on any of the social media outlets whenever you share your creations!

As always, I am a comment away if you have any questions on how this came together.

Take care!

Nathalie’s March Friday Recap

Nathalie @ scrapbooknerd.com

Hello there friends!

Can you believe that Spring is just around the corner?  But it seems winter just does not want to leave us yet!   I think we are ready for a new season, so all my good thoughts and vibes were channeled to this month’s projects, and my biggest source of inspiration was color.

Here is a quick look at what i created this month:

  •  “4”   The happy, colorful and super cheery “Joy Parade” collection from Fancy Pants Designs was perfect to document my little’s 4th birthday picture.   The  large confetti shaker element as a background just enhances the celebration feeling of this page.

  •  “HELLO FUN”   The layout was created as a companion to the Silhouette Savvy Series entry abut combining cut files.   The layout uses the free “Ho Ho Holidays”  cut file -designed by the Cut Shoppe for Scrapbook Nerd- and the new Paige Evans’s “Oh My Heart” collection to document my niece’s idea of fun, jumping on the bed.

  • “YOU”    I love florals, and the ones in the “Oh My Heart” collection from Pink Paislee are just so beautiful.   A bit of hand stitching to the fussy cut images was perfect to enhance the images details, and bring texture to this page.   A simple mixed media background complements the picture of my teenage daughter.

  •  “LIVE FOR THE MOMENT”   One of the new Pinkfresh Studio releases, “Dream On” was a dream to work with.  The patterns in the papers, and the beautiful color combination on the papers along with the Cut Shoppe’s cut  file added plenty of interest to this page all about my teenage son.

  • “FOREVER”   I just had to create this page,  since we have a lot of winter/snow pictures this year, I wanted to document one of my favorites in a non-wintery way.  So i picked this beautiful pink background from the “Oh My Heart” collection, added  this soft cut out -created from the Winter Lace cut file from the Silhouette Store-, and a bit of hand stitching to highlight the picture of my husband and I on one of our walks.

I hope this set of projects have served as inspiration to pull some color into your work, trust me is an excellent way to beat the winter blahs!

Remember to check the Scrapbook Nerd store to check what the ladies are bringing to the shelves, there are so many new products available.

I am always a comment away, if you need assistance with anything related to this projects or the blog tutorials.

Take care!
