Mixed Media on Monday

mixed media Monday at scrapbooknerd.com

Welcome back everyone,
I’ve been art journaling for a few years now and I still feel like I’m finding my style.
Some pages are full of texture and colour, others have more white space and I only use paint. Our art journals can be anything we want them to be and that means anything goes.

My page today started with a piece of deli paper that had paint on it, I think it was a scratch paper I was cleaning my brayer on and it gave me a colour palette to work with.

The girl on this page came from a magazine, I keep a stack of images in my stash and add to it when I get some fashion mags from my sister-in-law.
I usually add a quote to my pages but I couldn’t decide on one to use for this page so for now it’s blank.Art journal page by Joy @ scrapbooknerd.commixed media art journal page

Mixed Media on Monday

mixed media Monday at scrapbooknerd.com

Hello all,

It’s time for some more mixed media inspiration and as promised I am using the papers
I made in the MMM post two weeks ago. If you want to check out that post
you can click right here.DYI art journal paper
I get so much enjoyment out of creating art journal pages, it’s so relaxing and I just put things on the page. No stressing over choices and lots of colour!
If you have any questions about any part of the process or need some clarification on the techniques I used, please leave me a comment. I would love to hear from you. 🙂

Here we go.
1. I cut up the DIY paper into strips of varying widths and then adhered them to my blank art journal page

2. Using similar colours of paint and a brayer, I rolled on some colour overtop of the entire page and then started adding some layers with stencils, paint and a sponge.Mixed media on Monday

3. After adding several different stencils, I tore some pages from a magazine and added strips to the page. The next layer I added was some stamping with black Archival inks, then some doodling with a permanent black pen.Mixed media on Monday

4. The finishing touches were added by inking the edge of the entire page with black ink, adding a quote and then adhering the red arrow. When glueing things down, I like to use a matte medium.Perfect is Overrated art journal page by Joy. @scrapbooknerd.com

Hello Nerds!

I apologize for the tardiness for the late blog post. This should have been posted yesterday.

I am here to show you all how I did my background for my layout. It is actually very easy, and very fun!

Here is what you will need stencil, blending tool, inks of choice, and washi/masking tape.

I used Tim Holtz Ranger Distress Inks..all colors. But any ink would work.

Also, for the stencil, this is the one I used, but again, any stencil will work. 🙂

I positioned my stencil over my cardstock, and secured it with bits of washi tape, so it wil not move as I am blending over the stencil.

Like so:

I loaded up one of my tools with desired colored ink, and in a very gentle circular motion, but firm, pressed down on the stencil.

What I like about the Distress Inks is that they blend together so nicely.

I dd not want the entire background covered, so I did about 3/4 of it, some areas darker than others.

After you have acquired the desired effect, place your pictures and papers onto inked background.

Finish as you would normally do your layout, and there you have it.

I used Heidi Swapp’s September Skies papers behind my photo, as are the stickers from the same collection also.

I hope you enjoyed my little tutorial today. It is super fun, and really easy!

Thank you for letting me share!

Have a great day!

Laura

Mixed media on Monday’s

Hello, hello nerds.
I really like the look of watercolours but I don’t own a watercolour set so for today’s project I used distress inks and a watercolour pen. I primed the wooden sign board with gesso before getting out my modeling paste & stencil.

There’s nothing wrong with your eye’s, the words are a little askew. Sometimes things don’t work out and I decided to move on and add some colour.

The stencil I used is from Donna Downey and it’s one of my favourites. I applied plain modelling paste with a palette knife and allowed it to dry. Using my craft mat as a palette, I pressed my ink pads onto it so I could pick up the ink with the water brush to apply it to my project. It took several layers of ink to get the bold colours you see. Mixed media on Monday's at scrapbooknerd.com Mixed media on Monday's at scrapbooknerd.com

I also used distress inks to colour the flower and attached it with matte medium. The project was missing a finishing touch so I went back in with a chicken wire stencil and more modelling paste in random spots.
