Twine Flowers

Cathy @ scrapbooknerd.com

I was looking on Pinterest for some new ways to use twine and I stumbled across these cute flowers from Michelle from “Lady of Leisure Ink “guest posting on “The Bug Bytes February 2012”.  I have made a few adjustments to suit my needs and this is what I came up with.

You don’t need any special equipment, if you have twine in your stash I am sure you can find the rest of the items. Here is what you need, Chipboard or cereal box card, or cardboard, a circle punch or something you can trace, a pencil, a ruler, adhesive, dressmaker pins,a large darning type or craft needle, and twine.

First punch or cut out your circles, take your ruler and pencil and mark the circles with 6 lines divide it up like you would for a clock face. (my circles are 2″ )

#1

If using chipboard or cereal box card you will need to take your adhesive and stick 2 circles together, if using thicker cardboard like my example one circle is enough. Next take the pins and push the pins in about half way, in line with your pencil lines.

Next make a loop around 12 o’clock and tie off, continue taking the twine down and winding it around 6 o’clock , back up to 11 o’clock and down to 5 o’clock, and so on.

DSC_6635

When you have been around the “loom” once, go around again – for a thicker flower take a 3rd go around, it should look something like this. Leaving a long “tail” (about 12 – 15 inches) cut off the twine and thread the end through your needle. (I found a needle threader was a tremendous help for this step)

DSC_6637

Next you need to secure the petals by threading the needle through the back of the petal and back- stitching.

DSC_6638

Continue until you have secured all the petals, your flower should look something like this.

DSC_6639

Next take your needle and secure the thread by making a few stitches through the centre of the flower.

DSC_6640

Remove your pins and your flower is ready to use.

The red and black flowers were made with 3 loops around the circle, the beige was made with 2 loops around the circle.

Hello Nerds!

I apologize for the tardiness for the late blog post. This should have been posted yesterday.

I am here to show you all how I did my background for my layout. It is actually very easy, and very fun!

scrapbooknerd.com be you Laura

Here is what you will need stencil, blending tool, inks of choice, and washi/masking tape.

I used Tim Holtz Ranger Distress Inks..all colors. But any ink would work.

Also, for the stencil, this is the one I used, but again, any stencil will work. 🙂

scrapbooknerd.com stencil

I positioned my stencil over my cardstock, and secured it with bits of washi tape, so it wil not move as I am blending over the stencil.

Like so:

scrapbooknerd.com stencil washi

I loaded up one of my tools with desired colored ink, and in a very gentle circular motion, but firm, pressed down on the stencil.

What I like about the Distress Inks is that they blend together so nicely.

I dd not want the entire background covered, so I did about 3/4 of it, some areas darker than others.

After you have acquired the desired effect, place your pictures and papers onto inked background.

Finish as you would normally do your layout, and there you have it.

I used Heidi Swapp’s September Skies papers behind my photo, as are the stickers from the same collection also.

I hope you enjoyed my little tutorial today. It is super fun, and really easy!

Thank you for letting me share!

Have a great day!

Nathalie @ scrapbooknerd.com

Hello Nerds!,

Once again, Nathalie here…

For this month I chose to work  mainly with the Felicity collection from Pink Fresh Studio.  I love the bright spring colors mixed in white lots of white space and colorful illustrations.      Once I saw the heart paper in the collection, i  knew exactly the pictures I wanted to use for the layout.  However I wanted to put a large picture as the main focus of the page, and adding a second picture will have been too busy in the page.  So I set to create a storybook page for this layout (that is what i am calling this idea).

For this you will need:

Patterned paper (at least 4-5 different patterns),  2 sheets of cardstock (i am using white cardstock for this layout),  twine/ribbon/yarn -about 50 cm-,  hot glue gun,   two pictures (one 4×6 in, and smaller one), and some embelishments.

  • To start, trim one of the cardstock sheets to 11×11 in, and attached it one of the 12×12 patterned papers with hot glue (you can also wait to attach the carstock until the very end of the process).

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.1

  • Trim a strip of the same color cardstock to measure 4×12 in ,  mark the centerline at 6 in, and fold the strip in half ( it would look like a card).

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.2

  • Trim a 4×6 in piece of your choice of pattern paper, and attach it to the inside fold of the cardstock strip as follows:

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.4

  • Go ahead and place your smaller picture on the patterned paper side of the strip.   Feel free to embelish this picture to your liking, just make sure that you don’t create a lot of bulk on the picture.

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.5

  • Use the adjacent side (to the picture section )of the cardtock strip to add your story or the details about the pictures.  I have chosen to write my story, but you could print it and glue it, or use a Project Life card that will fit within the frame.  It is all completely up to you.

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.6

  • Now you are ready to add the twine/yarn/ribbon on the outside of the paper strip.   I would recommend you use a firm but not bulky piece of string.  For this layout, I am using a piece of red suede string.  To attach the string, making sure it does not move, use washi tape to hold it in place.

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.7

  • Using the hot glue gun, attach the large picture to the top cover of the fold.   Note:  i have trimmed my picture, and then matted it in the same color cardstock, so that it fits exactly on top of the folded strip -this way i can hide all edges and the string under the picture.

While the glue sets, go ahead and use the rest of the patterned papers to create layers that will sit under this story book.   I used a few staples and lots of glue to make sure that the layers will remain together and support the weight of the storybook.

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.8

  • It was my choice to keep the page very simple, as I wanted all the attention to be  centered on the storybook.   So I chose to hand stitch some hearts at the edges of where my title will be placed.  For this I drew a heart with a pencil, and using a sharp needle created holes at about 1/8 in intervals.  I erased the lines and used embroidery thread to hand stitch the hearts.

BEST FRIENDS -tutorial-.10

  • Using the hot glue gun, I attached the folded paper strip to the layers.  Once that set, I centered the layers on the 11x11in cardstock , and used hot glue gun to attach them together;  finally I added the this page to the 12×12 patterned paper using hot glue.   I would recommend you use hot glue as the weight of the story book and layers will pull the paper.

Best Friends @scrapbooknerd.com -scrapboook layout

  • Add embelishments along the page, making sure that they do not prevent the storybook from opening.   Here is what the layout looks like when the story book is opened:

Best Friends @scrapbooknerd.com -scrapbook layout tutorial

I hope you give this interactive storybook idea a try (my teens love the fact that the story is hidden), and you use it for some of your pictures.   Remember to link up your projects here on in the  members gallery  at ScrapbookNerd.com.

Till next time, Happy Crafting!!

Mixed Media on Monday

ScrapbookNerd.com

Hi Everyone!
I’m excited to share my project with you today. I’m showing you how I made my own background paper to make a series of mixed media cards.  I love creating background in my art journal so working with a large piece of watercolour paper I simply used the same techniques.

I used acrylic paints, a variety of stencils, a piece of text pattern paper (for the circles),
a makeup sponge for stencilling,a few rub-ons,  a black sharpie and some spray paint
(watered down acrylic paint in a spray bottle).

Mixed media on Monday

Below is the completed 9×12 background paper. I used my stencils in several ways including using a pen to trace the images. The circles are hand cut and a little wonky,I like them that way too 😀  I used the same pen to free hand circles on the pattern paper, used a lot of water while adding the paints as a first layer. I love the look of using the same paints in the background for stencilling, I do not water them down and they dry darker than the watered down paints.

mixed media on Monday

Next you simply cut down the paper to the desired card size you wish to make and sentiments and or focal images to finish off your cards. I got six card fronts and one 2.5×11 strip from my background paper.

Hello everyone. Now that the Holidays are winding down, it’s time to get your paper out and get creative again. After I’ve had a bit of a break in scrapbooking, I find that I need a quick project to boost my creative energy. Today, I have a quick and easy page tutorial to help you get back into the creative swing.

pp1

For this project you will need:
-a 12×12 piece of white cardstock
-three matching patterns of 12×12 paper – I’ve used the Photo Play Family Ties collection
-a pocket style card – I used the cut-apart sheet that came with the Family Ties collection
-embellishments that will match your paper (I pulled a few that I thought I may use, but in the end I only used the sticker sheets from the Photo Play Family Ties collection, and the MAMBI Chips – Insta Love.
-a 5×7 photo

pp2

Cut your patterned papers into various sizes. The Navy polkadot is 8″x6″, the blue chevron is 4″x10″ and the orange is 6″x7.5″
Layer them onto your background cardstock.

pp3

Add your photo.

pp4

Add your pocket-style card to the right edge of your photo.

pp5

Add your title.

pp6

Add your embellishments in clusters on the top left of the layout, the right side – over lapping the pocket-style card, and the bottom left of the photo. Make sure your embellishment are touching so that they don’t appear to be floating. I also use pop dots on some of my embellishments to give them some dimension.

pp7

pp8

There you have it – a quick layout to get you back into the creative swing.

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials

Have you ever tried watercolouring? Me neither but I decided to go out with a bang and push myself out of my comfort zone! LOL!! Luckily theses yummy Gelatos from Faber Castill make this technique super easy!!

First choose your gelato colours…You will also need cardstock, paintbrush, embossing gun and a spray bottle.

IMG_20150811_172342

Some people prep their pages with gesso but I decided to keep it super simple to get started so I just coloured up some white cardstock…

IMG_20150811_0954553

They are super creamy and colour like a dream! Next I just added some spritzes of water with my spray bottle and then blended with my paintbrush

I then used my embossing gun to speed up the drying process…and started to play!!

It doesn’t get much easier than Nerds!!

Doing a little “skinny dipping”…Tutorial…

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials @ scraobooknerd.com

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials

For today’s tutorial I thought I would combine it with one of our camp challenges and create a layout using only cardstock. But even “naked” you wanna look good so what better way to create a little interest than add a little ink! LOL!!

You will need…
Embossing folder and die cutting tool (big shot, cuttlebug etc)
pigment ink (not dye…needs to be slow drying)
Cardstock

Once you have chosen your embossing folder you will need to decide which side you want to ink up…you will be able to get two patterns for each folder depending on which side you add the ink to. The raised pattern will be where the ink is applied and the recess with be the “resist” and stay the colour of your cardstock
IMG_20150720_205512

Once you’ve added your ink just emboss with your tool….

IMG_20150720_2058532

…and add to your project!
Easy peasy!!

Here’s a close up….

Making Your Own Epoxy Titles

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials @ scraobooknerd.com

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials

Hello all you Nerds! Welcome to another tutorial by the Scrapbook Nerd Design Team.

If you’re like me, you love the look of epoxy titles. I buy them up, but then when it comes time to try and use one, I can’t seem to find one that fits the page I’m working on. So, I decided to make my own, as you can see on this finished layout.

junedt2_edited-1

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you just how easy it is to create your own epoxy titles to use on your next project.

What you need:

junedt2c

A computer print out of your desired title – unless you want to do it free-hand
Clear sticker backing
A Sharpie marker in the colour of your choice
Glossy Accents

Step-by-step:

junedt2d

Once you have printed out your desired title, place the clear sticker backing on top. I used a small amount of adhesive to keep the sticker backing in place.

junedt2e

Trace the title with the Glossy Accents on top of the clear sticker backing.

junedt2g

Once completed, set aside until it is dry completely.

junedt2h

When it is dry, use your sharpie marker to colour your title completely.

junedt2b

Peel the “epoxy title” from the clear sticker backing and adhere to your project. I used a little more glossy accents to adhere it to my project.

Have fun with this very easy technique to make your own fun epoxy titles.
