Free Cut Files

Our summer camp is still running and we are having lots of fun with all the challenges! You can check them out HERE in our forums, or HERE on our Friends and Fans Facebook Page.  We know that you will feel inspired to get busy.

As part of our camp, Nathalie has created some awesome cut files that we are offering FREE to all of you.

The first one you can see here, on her layout “Together”.

The second one is this great file, and perfect for your summer vacation photos.

You can find them both in the Scrapbook Nerd Store.

We would love to see what you create using these cut files, so be sure to link it up in our gallery or on our Facebook page.

Silhouette Savvy – Creating compound designs

V2-Nerd-Academy-600x132

Hello everyone!,

Nathalie here, I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful weather, and using the extra daylight to create beautiful projects.

For this tutorial – and continuing with the Silhouette Savvy series -, we will be exploring how to create a compound design by welding shapes together using the Silhouette Studio program.   For this project we will be using the new cut file, “Camp Glamp”, designed by the Cut Shoppe, and available for free at the Scrapbook Nerd store.

Many times when we look at a cut file, most of us only think on how the single image would fit into a project.  However, by following a few steps, the single image can be transformed to fit your project’s needs, and create a new unique cut file.

The heart image of  the cut file was multiplied two times  to create a new cut-file of three linked hearts.  Here is a small video on how the cut-out was created on Silhouette Studio by welding images together (this process can be applied to any cut file shape):

I hope you enjoyed the video; just in case you missed a step, I am adding a small point form list of the procedure steps:

  1. Trace the shape / shapes that will be used on the project  (for more information on how to trace an image, please refer to the previous Silhouette Savvy tutorial).  Make sure that each shape is traced individually.
  2. Select each individual image, highlight the individual image, select modify (or right button click on the mouse), then select Make Compound Path
  3. Repeat step 2 for each  shape that will be joined/ welded on the design.
  4. Arrange the images, to your liking, making sure that the edges that will be welded together either overlap, or are touching together.  Images will be welded, only if they are touching.
  5. Select all the shapes that will be welded (they will all be highlighted), select modify (or right button click on the mouse), then select Weld.
  6. Now the image is ready to be cut.

By following these steps, you will be able to create new cut files from your existing images and cut files, like the one i have created for this project.

I chose to back the cut out with some vellum (just behind the word Create), and color the letter space with gold paint.  To create the mat behind the cut-out, i used watercolor on a gessoed yellow cardstock.   Once i glued the background, I used different embroidery thread to hand stitch the edge of the cut-out.

Finally I added my picture, ephemera, and a few butterfly cut-outs all around the page.  Here is the final layout created with this welded image.

I hope this serves as inspiration to use cut-files in a new way.   Don’t forget to pick up a copy of the “Camp Glamp” cut file,  it is available for free at the store.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions about the layout, or if you are having issues with the welding process on your Silhouette program.   Also let me know if there is something you will like to learn about your Silhouette and its software.

See you soon!!

Silhouette Savvy Tutorial – Back to Basics

V2-Nerd-Academy-600x132

Hello everyone!,

I hope you all are enjoying some summer relaxation, and getting ready to craft at the 4th On-line Scrapbook Nerd Creative Summer Camp -it promises to be a fun one-.  We have been hard at work preparing lots of fun challenges and games for you all.  In addition, the store is releasing a new cut file (designed exclusively for Scrapbook Nerd by The Cut Shoppe),  “Camp Glamp”, which will work perfectly in your summer crafting projects.

But, do you know how to use a cut file?, or are you intimidated by the Silhouette software?.  I have been there, and YES!, the software looks scary.  However, once you learn the basics of the software, you will be amazed on how a cut file can add some extra detail to your crafting projects.

If you are a newbie at using your Silhouette machine, or just need a refresher on how to cut a simple shape, we have created a short video that will help you jump start your Silhouette Machine (this is my first video, so please forgive the nerves, and my spanish accent).

Here is the written version of the video ( you could have this printed and attach it to the machine’s lid):

  1. Go to File –> Open –> Find File –> Click OK
  2. Trace the shape you want to cut (either open the Trace window, or chose Object –>Trace)
  3. In the Trace Window click Select Trace Area
  4. Use your mouse to highlighht over the image you want to cut in the file
  5. Uncheck High Pass Filter Box
  6. Under Apply Trace Method, click Trace
  7.  Delete the original PNG, SVG or JPG image, or just move it away from the mat image (the machine will only cut what is inside the mat image on the screen)
  8. Now you are ready to cut,  just go to the Cutting window, and follow the prompts to  obtain the settings for the material you are using for the cut-out.   Choose Cut Edge to cut the bright red lines on the cut-file.

My apologies, for not showing you the machine cutting the shape, or the ending cut-out (however, if you have questions about the machine, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I am no expert, but i have picked a few tips on the software and machine).  However, once  the shapes were cut, the empty spaces were backed with different papers from My Mind’s Eye “On Trend 2” collection.

SWEET-2

For this layout, i used two wheels, but chose to add dimension by attaching them using large pieces of fun-foam under the shape (I wanted to make them look like they were spinning).

Here is a  look at the final layout, and how the shapes were used to create a background for the layout.

So I will encourage you to take a second look at your Silhouette machine,  and if there are any specific topic or something new you would like to learn, let us know so we can help you with it (I promise to keep paying my IT guy -a.k.a. my son-, so he can produce more videos  😉 ).  As always leave me a message here or at the forum if you have any questions or need help with the software.

Till next time,

Happy Crafting!!
